New York, August 15, 2023 \u2013 The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences today announced the nominees for the 2023 News & Current Affairs categories.The International Emmy\u00ae<\/sup> winners will be recognized alongside their American news peers during a ceremony in New York City, on September 27.<\/p>\n

The 8 nominees span 6 countries: Brazil, Israel, Qatar, Sweden, Turkey and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

Nominated programs in the News category include stories on the War in Ukraine, the death of Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh while on assignment in the West Bank and the disappearance and deaths of Brazilian researcher of Indigenous culture, Bruno Pereira, and British journalist, Dom Phillips, in the Amazon.<\/p>\n

Nominated Programs in the Current Affairs category include investigations into the death of 30 asylum seekers trying to cross the sea from France to Britain on an inflatable boat and the plight of civilians caught in the cross fire in the Ukraine War.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a world full of turmoil and conflict, the need for true journalistic voices is more vital than ever.\u201d said Bruce L. Paisner, President & CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. \u201cWe salute the journalists around the world who take great risks every day to bring important human and political issues to the forefront.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jornal Nacional and Fant\u00e1stico: The Murder Of Bruno And Dom

\nBrazil<\/p>\n

A Brazilian researcher of Indigenous culture, Bruno Pereira, and British journalist, Dom Phillips, were killed in Indigenous territory in the Javari Valley in the Amazon. Globo shows the investigation and the search for the men’s bodies. The crime exposed the government’s environmental policies.<\/p>\n

Shireen Abu Akleh’s Killing

On May 11, Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh\u2019s went to the Jenin refugee camp to report on an Israeli raid. She never made it back: Abu Akleh was shot dead on the scene. Her legacy lives on globally, while demands for a transparent investigation of her death erupted around the world.<\/p>\n

The Battle For Bucha & Irpin

This news coverage starts on March 5th<\/sup>, 2022 as the brutal battles for Bucha and Irpin began, when Russian troops attempted to surround Kyiv.\u00a0 Civilians were bombed out of their homes leaving many with no choice but to escape. And others, including Sky’s own journalists, were targeted in their cars.<\/p>\n
