The change is pursuant to a rule adopted by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences earlier this year which extended jurisdiction in this area to the International Academy.<\/p>\n
“Recent demographic trends and electoral events have made clear that the United States is becoming a multilingual country, and these developments are increasingly reflected in the country’s television programs.” said International Academy President & CEO, Bruce L. Paisner. “The International Academy is looking forward to expanding its jurisdiction in a way that enables US primetime programs primarily not in English to compete for Emmys against each other.”<\/p>\n
The Category will be open to any primetime program produced by a US company or aired first in the US, in a language 50% or more other than English. Programs eligible include scripted dramas, comedies and telenovelas, as well as unscripted reality, variety and game shows that originally aired in primetime (6:00 PM- 2:00 AM).
