New York, September 30, 2014 – The 2014 International Emmys for News & Current Affairs were presented tonight to Syria’s Descent and the fifth estate: Made In Bangladesh. The International Emmys were presented by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in conjunction with the US News Emmys during a ceremony which took place at Lincoln Center, in New York City.

Syria’s Descent produced by ITN for Channel 4 News, won the News category. This story charts Syria’s descent into hopelessness with searing coverage from Aleppo, Damascus, Ras-al-Ayn and Zaatari refugee camps, as the brutal civil war entered its third year.

The fifth estate: Made In Bangladesh produced by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) won the Current Affairs category. This report investigates the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in Dhaka, during which 1,000 garment workers died, and exposes the inhumane work conditions imposed by local contractors hired by major North American clothing brands.

“In these dangerous and unsettled times, the need for high quality news has never been so great.” said Bruce L. Paisner, President & CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “These two programs capture two strands of critical news reporting today: news of war, and news of people who suffer, even absent war.”
