JOÃO ROBERTO MARINHO, PRESIDENT OF BRAZIL’S GRUPO GLOBO TO RECEIVE INTERNATIONAL EMMY® DIRECTORATE AWARD
Marinho Recognized For His Leadership As Grupo Globo Celebrates
Its Centennial and TV Globo’s 60th Anniversary
New York, September 2, 2025—João Roberto Marinho, the President of Grupo Globo—Brazil’s leading media and entertainment conglomerate—will receive the 2025 International Emmy® Directorate Award. Marinho will accept the Emmy®, at the International Emmy®Awards Gala in New York, on November 24th—as the company marks the centennial of Grupo Globo and the 60th anniversary of TV Globo.
“João Roberto Marinho is a pillar of Globo’s success. He has dedicated his career to reinforcing the group’s commitment to quality production, social responsibility and above all independent journalism, said Bruce L. Paisner, President & CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “The Academy looks forward to recognizing his outstanding leadership with our 2025 International Emmy® Directorate Award.”
“It is a great honor to receive this recognition from the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, especially in a year that marks our centennial. This journey began with my grandfather, Irineu Marinho, in 1925, and was boldly expanded by my father, Roberto Marinho, and my brother Roberto Irineu Marinho, both guided by two great passions: the passion for communication and for Brazil. Over the years, many of our productions have been recognized by the Academy for their quality, reinforcing our shared commitment to excellence. This award celebrates the talent, creativity, and dedication of all those who believe in the power of Brazilian storytelling and in professional journalism as an essential pillar of democracy,” said João Roberto Marinho.
The Globo Group, owned by the Marinho family, began its story in 1925 when Irineu Marinho founded the daily newspaper O Globo. The group’s expansion was headed by Roberto Marinho, his eldest son, who founded the TV network in 1965. Over the decades, Globo has evolved into a multi-platform media powerhouse, with a strong presence across television, streaming, cinema, radio, digital platforms, and out-of-home media (OOH). Throughout this transformation, the group has maintained its leadership and a firm focus on delivering high-quality content to diverse audiences.
João Roberto Marinho began his career in 1973 in the newsroom and held various strategic positions which shaped the company’s all-important guidelines and its steadfast commitment to independent journalism.
João Roberto’s appointment to the presidency reflects a leadership restructuring within Grupo Globo and was accompanied by other important changes with the arrival of the fourth generation of the Marinho family in leadership roles. During his tenure, Grupo Globo was officially declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the City of Rio de Janeiro. This recognizes the Group’s national and international contributions over a century, noting its fundamental role in promoting and strengthening Brazilian culture, disseminating information and shaping public opinion, impacting generations of citizens.
Today, Globo’s programming is distributed to 160 territories in 70 languages.
As previously announced the Academy will also present its International Emmy® Founders Award to Dana Walden, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment.
