BATTLE FOR HOMS WINS INTERNATIONAL EMMY® FOR NEWS

BANAZ: AN HONOUR KILLING WINS INTERNATIONAL EMMY® FOR CURRENT AFFAIRS

New York, October 1, 2013 – The 2013 International Emmys for News & Current Affairs were presented tonight to The Battle for Homs and Banaz: An Honour Killing. The International Emmys were presented by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in conjunction with the US News Emmys during a ceremony which took place at Jazz at Lincoln Center, in New York City.

The Battle for Homs produced by Channel 4 News, won the News category. The story covers the start of the shelling of Homs by government Syrian forces, early February 2012 and the breaking news around the few independent journalists in Homs at the time, including Marie Colvin and Remi Ochlik who died reporting on these events.

Banaz: An Honour Killing produced by Hardcash Productions, Fuuse Films for ITV, won the Current Affairs category. This film chronicles an act of overwhelming horror – the brutal ‘honour’ killing of Banaz Mahmod, a young British Kurdish woman in suburban London. Banaz was raped and murdered by her own family, with the agreement and help of a large section of her own community, because she tried to choose a life for herself.

“These are both outstanding productions of horrific stories,” said Bruce L. Paisner, President & CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “They fulfill the vital obligation of journalists and broadcasters to tell us what is really going on in our world, no matter how disturbing or controversial.”

The International Academy will announce the Nominees for its 6 kids categories, on October 2 and the Nominees for 9 other program categories, at Mipcom, in Cannes, France on October 7.
